Limits and Strengths of Tree-Ring Stable Isotopes

چکیده

Abstract This chapter aims at summarizing strengths and caveats on the suitability of stable carbon oxygen isotopes in tree rings as recorders for fingerprints environmental influences. First, constraints limiting growth shaping species distribution worldwide are discussed. Second, examples presented conditions under which tree-ring record signals particularly well, but also cases where physiological processes can mask climate signals. Third, link between leaf-level assimilation investment assimilates stem during annual ring formation discussed light resulting deviations isotopic values leaves rings. Finally, difficulties pitfalls interpretation isotope reviewed. These problems often result from a poor understanding when how canopy, stems roots physiologically interconnected. Current literature suggests that photosynthesis radial only loosely coupled, if all, challenging recorded isotopes. Harsh (e.g. low temperatures, drought) decoupling growth. The closes by providing possible solutions to improve detection information integrating scales different methodological approaches.

Pooled versus separate measurements of tree-ring stable isotopes.

δ(13)C and δ(18)O of tree rings contain time integrated information about the environmental conditions weighted by seasonal growth dynamics and are well established as sources of palaeoclimatic and ecophysiological data. Annually resolved isotope chronologies are frequently produced by pooling dated growth rings from several trees prior to the isotopic analyses. This procedure has the advantage...

Stable isotopes in tree rings

Stable isotopes in tree rings could provide palaeoclimate reconstructions with perfect annual resolution and statistically defined confidence limits. Recent advances make the approach viable for non-specialist laboratories. The relevant literature is, however, spread across several disciplines, with common problems approached in different ways. Here we provide the first overview of isotope dend...

Uniform climate sensitivity in tree-ring stable isotopes across species and sites in a mid-latitude temperate forest.

Tree-ring stable isotopes, providing insight into drought-induced eco-physiological mechanisms, are frequently used to reconstruct past changes in growing season temperature and precipitation. Their climatic response is, however, still not fully understood, particularly for data originating from non-extreme, mid-latitude environments with differing ecological conditions. Here, we assess the res...

Hydrochemistry and stable isotopes study of the precipitation at Haraz Basin, north of Iran

Stable isotopes (Deuterium and Oxygen-18) have a broad application in many of water related sciences. Precipitation is the most important input to the water cycle which shows considrable spatial and temporal variability in its isotope content. To study the precipitation isotope content, 51 samples from August 2015 to July 2016 have been collected mainly on a monthly basis with few events based ...
